Sumi is a duo consisting of Mikkel Sørensen (guitar, synth, machines) and Sune Borregaard (steel pans, machines). Rasmus Riis has been a member of the band (making it a trio) in the period 2005-2008. Currently, Riis is only collaborating occasionally with Sumi, and he is appearing on their forthcoming album which is also featuring the great Thomas Knak (Opiate).
Sumi's starting point is a musical with ample space for experimenting and pursuing spontaneous ideas. The musicians manipulate the sounds of their instruments with various effects, and the result is wide and nuanced soundscapes. Sounds and pieces of melody are recording during the performance and used as loops and detached samples. These elements along with the members' different musical backgrounds results in beautiful, intuitive music where no distinct style is defined, but where melodic fragments converge into expressive sound collages. Sumi released their critically acclaimed debut album in 2005, and 2008 will see the release of the groups second record which will be featuring collaborations with a classical string quartet and one of the key figures on the international electraonica scene, Danish Thomas Knak/Opiate.
